Chapter Nine

Serena sat in the living area of the treehouse alone, sipping on the ale she found in the refrigerator, or cold box, as they called it. Khaos and Jahl’s argument left her feeling depressed, and she admitted to wanting time alone. It didn’t help that clouds had moved in and with the clear ceiling, the gray outside permeated the house. Even the tree leaves appeared duller.

Something about the men’s argument bothered her but she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. It niggled at the back of her brain. Yes, she was uncomfortable having two friends who admitted loving her, fighting each other. That entire scenario made her question her own beliefs as it was.

She’s always figured someday she’d walk down the aisle, her dad giving her away to a man she loved. Just the idea of him giving her away to two men had her smirking. Her bear of a father would be in shock. But if she insisted, he’d look sternly at them and demand they both love and protect her, meaning put her on a pedestal. Then he’d grab a scotch and throw it back. He’d do anything for his daughters.

She sighed and took another sip of ale. She missed not being able to call her mom or dad if she wanted to, but she’d only been gone four days. It was her pathetic need to have them close when she was conflicted. And she was very conflicted. To have two men loving her when she didn’t even know them was strange. Though to be truthful, she already had feelings for both. That was something she simply couldn’t understand. She must be missing something.

The door to the treehouse opened and she tensed.

“Hey, why’s it so gloomy in here?” Toni strode in with her Amazon outfit on—at least that’s how Serena thought of it.

She relaxed and put on a smile. “It’s the weather.”

Toni shook her head as she plopped down on the couch, her favorite spot. “Huh-uh. It’s more than that. Come on, spill.”

Serena grimaced before taking another sip of the ale.

Toni rolled her eyes. “It can’t be that bad. Nothing in this place can be that bad, expect maybe Sandale’s death. I just came back from the sculptor’s pad. There is some serious talent here. It looks so real it’s a bit eerie.”

“Have they set a day for the ceremony yet?” She’d much rather talk about that than why she felt blue.

“Yup. Next week, on Hermday. That’s the third day. At least, that’s what I was told. I guess they haven’t heard of hump day.” Toni smiled, her pleasure in learning everything there was to know about Eden making Serena question her own curiosity.

She seemed more curious about the two men who loved her than the dream planet she’d come to.

“So, you didn’t answer my question. What’s with the long face?”

Serena smiled. “I don’t have a long face. My father calls me his pixie for a reason.”

“Nice try.” Toni fixed her with a stare that said talk or else.
